Bat

Flying Fox (1875)

‘Airy mouse, airy mouse fly over my head,

And you shall have a crust of bread;

And when I brew and when I bake,

You shall have a piece of my wedding cake.’

--Old Cornish Verse

Once known as a ‘flittermous’ these nocturnal creatures dwell in dark caves, tunnels, and lofts and come to life at twilight. Associated with darkness, witches, and vampires, some cultures, consider the bat a messenger from the underworld as well as a symbol of good luck and happiness.
