Bobbing for apples has been a favorite autumn game in Europe for several hundred years. Since the 1800s, it has become synonymous with Samhain and Halloween across North America. Sometimes used as a live divination, potential suitors would carve their names on apples, and possible candidates would bob into the barrel of water, attempting to sink their teeth into an apple.
One try meant the player would marry their suitor.
Two tries meant the suitor would court the player but never marry.
Three tries meant that the marriage was not meant to be.
