Bonfires

Lithograph by J.W. Hennessy (19th Century)

The lore surrounding fire is some of the oldest known to humans worldwide. As an elemental force, it was thought to represent renewal and are used at certain times of the year for practical purposes, rituals and celebrations.

They are still commonly used to mark the end of seasons and the New Year's beginning. Bonfire Nights mark numerous yearly events, including Guy Fawkes Night (November 5th in Great Britain), All Hallows’ Eve (October 31st), and Midsummer Eve (June 23rd).

For divination purposes, people often toss objects into bonfires and use the burning pattern or explosion to foretell future events. Ashes from bonfires were often collected and scattered over fields to ensure plentiful harvests and good luck.
