Brooms

Updated: Dec 18

Quite a few superstitions are associated with the everyday use of brooms, such as when using a new broom for the first time, always sweep something into the house to invite prosperity and new beginnings into your home. Always store brooms with the bristles facing upwards to prevent strangers from entering your house. If a broom falls over, it means that some company will soon be arriving, but remember not to step over it once it has fallen to avoid bad luck. If you move to a new house, never bring your old broom, or it will carry all your old problems to your new home. To sweep away nightmares, hang a broom on the inside of your bedroom door.

Remember never to buy a broom in May as the old rhyme from 19th century England says:

“If you sweep the house with broom in May, You'll sweep the head of that house away.”
