Butterflies

Engraving by William Lizars (1840)

To see three butterflies together is as good as seeing three magpies.

~Nottinghamshire

In spring, the butterflies emerge from their cocoons, and in many cultures, butterflies are associated with souls, transformation, rebirth, and luck. In ancient Greece, it was believed that butterflies, particularly white ones, were the incarnations of ancestors, loved ones, and messengers from the afterlife.

In Japan, when one lands on a person, it is a sign that they will soon receive a visit from a relative. In parts of England, it is said that if the first butterfly you see in spring is white, you will have good fortune all season, though a brown butterfly is a sign of hard times ahead. In America, it is believed that if a butterfly enters your home, a marriage will soon follow.

In Ozark folklore, it is thought that counting the spots on a fritallery’s wings will predict your financial future.
