Candles

Painting by Gerrit Dou (1613-1675)

The colonial tradition of placing lit candles in the windows at Christmas comes from an old custom in Ireland. In Appalachia, a candle in the window indicates a sign of welcome, and some believe it is to guide lost souls home.

If a candle suddenly burns blue, it is a sign that a ghost has entered the room. A flickering candle may be a sign of a restless spirit. If a candle is hard to light, it might mean a storm is brewing.
