The Nordic Frau Holle In German and Nordic folklore, Frau Holle, also known as "Mother Holle" or "Old Mother Frost," is thought to be the cause of snow when she shakes her downy feather mattress or duvet in the heavens. She is a kind, wintery deity that predates the Norse pantheon and is thought to be originally called Hulda. it is said that on the twelve days of Christmas, Frau Holle dresses in white and travels through the sky on a wagon, rewarding those she encounters who help her with gold. She was immortalized in an 1812 story by the Brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
