Garlic

Jakob Meydenbach (1491)

Garlic has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since 200 BC and is still used today. In ancient Egypt, garlic was considered a gift from the gods and a form of protection for over two thousand years. Sailors used this strong-scented plant to prevent shipwrecks, miners to protect from mischievous goblins, and Roman soldiers ate garlic before going into battle.

Brides often tuck garlic in their clothing, and in ancient India and Japan, it was considered an aphrodisiac. Dreaming of garlic means discovering hidden secrets. Many people still wear garlic around their necks or hang garlic braids over their doors for extra luck and protection.

Before it reached its height of fame as a protection against vampires and werewolves, garlic was known throughout Europe to repel the ‘evil eye.’ Aside from deterring evil spirits, devils, infections, envy, night terrors, sunstroke, rabies, toothache, thieves, and witches, according to Korean folklore, garlic will even protect you from tigers.
