At the end of October, as the liminal veil grows thin, apparitions begin to stir. Many believe that a ghost is the spirit of a deceased person and that if you ask them, “What in God’s name do you want?” the ghost will either respond or disappear.
On Hallow’een it is not wise to linger near graveyards to avoid offending wandering ghosts and malevolent entities that might be nearby. If you carry a sprig of lavender with you, inhaling the scent will enable you to see ghosts that are present but have not manifested.
Apparitions are said to appear at crossroads where, in ancient times, criminals were buried to deter them from finding their way back home. An old Scottish tradition was to wear a cross of rowan, bound with a red thread inside the lining of one’s coat for protection against the supernatural. There are a number of precautions to take to avoid supernatural encounters, one is to never leave an empty chair rocking, as it will invite a restless ghost to settle in.
