The word lavender is from the Latin word ‘lavare,’ meaning ‘to wash.’ In the Middle Ages, people wore lavender tied to their wrists to protect against the plague. It was also believed that wearing lavender would protect against witches and malevolent spirits.
Lavender has long been used as a sleep and relaxation remedy, and on St. Luke’s Day, it was used for divination. In Tudor times, women who wanted to dream of their true love would brew a lavender tea at midnight and recite: “St Luke, St Luke, be kind to me. In my dreams, let me, my true love, see.”
