Marigolds

Updated: Dec 18

Engraving by Johann Theodor De Bry (1611)

The brilliant marigolds cheer in the transitioning autumn days with orange, yellow, rust, and fiery red pom poms. They are the birth flower of October, and these ancient flowers can be traced back to the Aztecs. Marigold (Tagetes) has both culinary and medicinal uses and helps relieve melancholy. They have been used in bridal bouquets and nicknamed (summer’s bride) and are also considered by some to be an aphrodisiac.

Marigolds are used in the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, to honor the dead and celebrate the lives of ancestors. Many believe marigolds to have protective powers and hang garlands over the doors to prevent malignant spirits from entering the home. Carrying this flower will bring good luck, and dreaming of marigolds means a windfall is coming soon.
