Phantom Ships

Updated: Dec 18

19th Century Woodcut

Phantom ships were often sighted along the Cornish coast and considered an omen of impending storms and wrecks. These ships with no crew would appear to be floating over the sea and continuing their journey onto dry land or would drift before keeling over to one side in the water and disappear. Sometimes, these ships would play out a recurring tragedy, complete with ghostly crew, and would sink on the anniversary of their doom. The infamous Flying Dutchman was one such reenactment story and sightings of the ship date back to the 1700s. It is said that the Dutchman is commanded by a captain doomed to sail forever after he swore to God that he would never be prevented from sailing around the cape.
