Quilts

Newspaper Engraving (1885

The skill of quilting is thought to have begun with the 12th-century Crusaders, who wore a quilted garment beneath their armor. One of the earliest surviving decorative works is the Tristan Quilt (1360).

In America, young women made charm quilts from 999 squares of fabric, and the 1000th square was meant to be the shirt of their future husband. It was said that once a bride-to-be began to sew a quilt, she would not be married until it was finished.

Spider web designs in quilts are considered lucky, but it is not recommended to sew human figures on a quilt for fear they might come to life during the night. It is believed that a person’s first dream while sleeping under a new quilt will come true.
