Raven

Updated: Dec 18

Alex Fletcher (1875)

Trickster, guardian, and harbinger of shadows, the mythic Raven (Corvus Corax) blithely travels the barrier between the worlds. The collective noun for ravens is an ‘unkindness,’ and to spot two crows together is a sign of spiritual awakeness. In Welsh folklore, the raven perched upon a roof is a sign of good luck to the family, and in Cornwall, there is the belief that terrible luck will fall on anyone who harms a raven, and some believe they are a reincarnation of King Arthur.

Many believe that when the last Raven that dwells (or fewer than seven) in the Tower of London dies, the British Monarchy will fall.

Old counting tradition:

If one raven is seen, sadness is in store.

If two are spotted, happy days lie ahead.

If three ravens are counted, there will be a marriage.

If four ravens appear, there will be a birth.
