The Rougarou (roux-ga-roux, rugaroo, or rugaru) is a Cajun folklore shape-shifting creature with a human body and the head of a wolf that roams the Lousiana swamps when the moon is full. Many believe it to be a direct relation to the Loup-garou, a medieval French werewolf. One Creole legend about the beast claims that the Rougarou is under a curse and is hunting for another human to whom the curse can be transferred. Another legend warns that the beast will hunt down Catholics who have broken the rules of Lent. Some say you can trick the blood-thirsty Cajun monster by placing 13 beans by your door—the forgetful beast will not be able to count that high before sunrise and will retreat to the swamp.
