Stars, Comets, and Meteor Showers

Updated: Dec 18

Illustration (1799)

Comets have been considered a supernatural phenomenon and harbingers of doom for centuries. The Greeks thought a comet might herald the birth of a great and powerful person. Many cultures believed that comets had the power to make your wishes come true.

At the end of October, the Draconid meteor shower becomes visible. Ancient Greek astronomers believed that meteors and comets were signs that the gods were angry. Some thought that meteors happened when Zeus grew angry and hurled stones down to earth.

Many cultures believe that you should make a wish on a shooting star, and some believe that they are the souls of the dead ascending to the heavens. Sailors believe that the direction a shooting star fell in was a prediction of the direction the winds would blow.
