Tea and Tasseography

Painting by Nicholas Crowley (1842)

Tasseography or tasseomancy is the ancient art of reading tea leaves. To divine the future, patterns in the tea leaves are interpreted using intuition and a set of symbols after the cup has been drained. The leaves left close to the cup’s rim represent upcoming events, a ring means marriage, a butterfly indicates success, a horseshoe for good luck, and swans for good fortune and grace.

Some superstitions surrounding tea leaves include sprinkling dry tea leaves on your front door to ward off evil spirits, inviting good luck into your home, and tossing your tea leaves into the fire to ensure luck and wealth. When tea is strong, you will meet a new friend, but if it is weak, you will lose one. Spilling tea is thought to be lucky, and if your sugar doesn’t completely dissolve, it means someone has a crush on you.
