The Moon

Engraving by Jan Luyken (1687)

The mystical moon has enchanted humankind for centuries. October is the first full moon of the winter season. Many myths and superstitions surround the moon and its celestial activity. The Greek philosopher Aristotle and Roman historian Pliny the Elder were convinced that the mystical moon influenced not only the tides but also human psychology.

When the moon waxes, it is believed to be the optimum time to plant seeds and trim hair to promote healthy growth. It was also said that it was a good time to start a new business and that children born under a full moon would flourish. Some old customs from the 16th century were to count the money in your pocket under the new moon to ensure it increases and to blow a kiss to the new moon to have a lucky month. When a person wishes to dream of their future spouse, they should sit on a gate to greet the new moon.
